USING THE CHISEL
Chisels are incredibly versatile joinery tools that are often under used. A number of more specialized tools are simply a replacement for a chisel method in order to provide more control (a handplane being the most obvious example – a plane iron is like a very thin, wide chisel with the plane body providing control). That means if you don’t have that specialized tool, you can still do the job, using a chisel freehand.
There are many different types of chisels for different operations, with different shapes and handle types, made in a range of widths. Some are made for heavy use, such as chopping mortises, where you may drive them with a mallet. Others are made for lighter, more delicate use, such as paring, where you drive them only with hand pressure.
The bench chisels are the most versatile, a compromise of the different characteristics. They can be used for everything from light paring to heavier chopping. Their handles are strong enough that they can be used with a mallet.
Try exercises here with each of your chisels, paying attention to which ones are made for a mallet and which ones aren’t. Try some cross-grain orientation, some splitting, some shaving, some bevel-up, some bevel-down, some paring, some chopping. See how they respond to different soft and hard woods.
